Action Stations: Act Now for Bastion Point !!!

We were informed by Minister for the Environment Ryan Smith at the Clean Beaches awards – see our web post Finalists in Clean Beaches Awards! - that a decision on Bastion Point will be made soon.

We are asking all our supporters to act now by writing emails or letters to Minister Ryan Smith, to Premier Ted Baillieu, and Deputy Premier Peter Ryan. Please see our What Can I Do? web page for email addresses of other politicians that it would help to contact.

Your own viewpoint is most important, but points you could make are:

We are grateful that the Government is undertaking a review of the project by comparing the Council’s Option 3b proposal to the low impact alternative concept prepared by the community.
The Independent Inquiry into the Environment Effects Statement was an open and thorough process, and found that Option 3b was uneconomic, to the overall net detriment of tourism, and of no social benefit.
The Panel recommended a minor upgrade without breakwaters at the existing site as the best solution.“Bastion Point Beach” was a finalist in the recent 2011 Clean Beaches Awards. This emphasises the significance of Bastion Point and demonstrates the need for its preservation. Option 3b has too great an impact on Bastion Point’s special values and is totally inappropriate for the area.
It should never be approved under the Coastal Management Act. Acting to provide a low impact solution that preserves the unique natural environment of Bastion Point and promotes sustainable tourism growth would be seen as good policy in the local, state and national arena.

Whilst we realise that many of you may have already written, we are calling on you to do so once again - this will be our last chance before the new government adopts a firm position on the future of Bastion Point.
