US Corporations threaten peoples' internet - read and act

Posted April 9th, 2010 by admin

"Comcast, AT&T, and Verizon -- the most powerful broadband providers -- are trying to fundamentally change the way the Internet works. They're seeking to make even bigger profits by acting as gatekeepers over what we see and do online. If they succeed, the Internet would be more like radio and television: a few major corporations would control which voices are heard most easily, and it would be much harder for grassroots groups, individuals, and small businesses to compete with large corporations and well-funded special interests."

Australia: Swan’s growth fetish belies the LibLab's stale 20th Century baby-boomer ideology

Posted April 7th, 2010 by John Marlowe

Today Treasurer Wayne Swan has tried to justify another rise in interest rates by claiming in true 'polly-speak' that such an impost is a sign of stronger Australian economy. Swan’s growth fetish belies the Lib/Labs stale ideology. Last month Swan's fettish for strong economic growth and strong population growth for Australia was reaffirmed at the Population Summit in Brisbane held 30th March 2010.

But Swan's growth fetish and consequential rising costs of living do not augur well for most Australians with mortgages.

Australia: Rudd's new Population Ministry

Posted April 6th, 2010 by Skooner

The gap between the policies of the Liberal/Labor (Liboral?) party elites - that are politically addicted to massive population growth and mass-immigration - and the wishes of the electorate has never been greater. It’s a bipartisan problem. But Rudd appears like a deer caught in headlights.

How a Kangaroo Joey With Serious Injuries was Saved

Posted April 6th, 2010 by Menkit Prince

This joey would have died if not from the timely intervention and help from Profs. Steve and Rosemary Garlick at their property in N.S.W. What a pity more vets and wildlife carers don't follow this protocol and instead, opt to euthanise?
An engaging and uplifting short story.

Optimism Is Just Another Word For Delusional Hubris

Why be optimistic or pessimistic? Why not just be realistic? Isn't that what a scientist should be?

We Need Binocular Vision To See Our Limitations ---Ecological Footprint Analysis is a necessary but insufficient tool

Posted April 6th, 2010 by tim

We cannot afford to examine our crisis with one eye. We need binocular vision. We need both Ecological Footprint Analysis (EFA) and Societal Overextension Analysis (SOA). Bound together they would provide a panoramic view of sustainability.

Why are bullets preferred over translocations of kangaroos?

Posted April 6th, 2010 by Vivienne Ortega

The kangaroo habitat in Mill Park/South Morang was, not surprisingly, earmarked for development, and there was no “suitable habitat” left in Victoria for translocation!  Over 21 kangaroos were shot by shooters, employed by the DSE. Is it reasonable to keep comparing studies on possums, tiger snakes, rock wallabies to eastern grey kangaroos?  (photo: courtesy of Wildlife Victoria)
On what scientific basis, or body of experience, do our official “experts” conclude that a mass slaughter of kangaroos is more humane than translocation?

Schapelle to be sent to die in remote Java prison

Posted April 5th, 2010 by admin

Schapelle Corby was falsely convicted by the corrupt Indonesian judicial system for the ludicrous crime of having smuggled Marijuhana worth $35,000 in Australia to a country in which it would have been worth $5,000. Having been cynically abandoned by the successive Howard and Rudd Governments, she is now to be transferred away from the life-sustaining support she now receives from her sister Mercedes, a resident of Bali.to a prison in Java.

What you can do: Vote for Schapelle to be returned home to Australia in an online Women's Day poll. See also: freeschapelle.com.au and forum, Women for Schapelle on Facebook, A selective capacity for human compassion? of 24 Feb 10.

Kevin Rudd’s population policy already decided? SPA

Was Martin Bryant the Port Arthur killer?

Posted April 3rd, 2010 by James Sinnamon

How could Martin Bryant, whose IQ of 66 placed him amongst the bottom 1 or 2% of the Australian population, have performed the deadly feats of marksmanship at Port Arthur on 28 April 1996 that few fully trained soldiers are capable of? (Includes embedded YouTube videos "Aussie 9/11 'Port Arthur massacre'", "Port Arthur massacre - Martin Bryant set up, part 1 of 2", "Port Arthur massacre - Martin Bryant set up, part 2 of 2".) Animal abuse inculcates social deviance

Posted April 3rd, 2010 by Tigerquoll

"THE relentless torture of a pet cat that was shot 27 times at point-blank range in the head and neck with an air rifle has outraged animal welfare authorities." [© Cairns Post, 2-Mar-09]

Clearly, the self-confessed wildlife serial killer finds his behaviour with slaughtering kangaroos acceptable to the extent he is educating his son in the same practices from an early age. It is likely he himself learnt this attitude and behavior from his own father. But animal abuse is not normal behaviour. It is immoral and unacceptable in civil society.

Animal abusers are five times more likely to commit violent crimes against people...than are individuals without a history of animal abuse.

Background on the Australian Multicultural Foundation

Posted April 3rd, 2010 by Sheila Newman

A few years ago I heard about the Australian Multicultural Foundation in the context of donations by the Scanlon Foundation (formerly the Brencorp Foundation) to the Australian Academy of Technical Sciences and Engineering (ATSE) for the production of the "Scanlon Report on "The technological implications of Australia at 30 million in 2030". The AMF was also the recipient of Scanlon Foundation funding together with the Institute of Global Movements, at Monash University, run by Professor Nieuwenhuysen, who used to be with the Bureau of Immigration. What initially got my attention was the enormous amount of money and publicity the AMF and the IGF attracted. Then what absolutely arrested my attention was the membership of the Australian Multicultural Foundation - made up largely of prime ministers and almost-prime ministers of every political complexion. I then became interested in the history of the AMF and decided to try to track down its origins and early associations. This is an interim report.

Madang landowners fight ecologically devastating Chinese mining invasion

Posted April 2nd, 2010 by admin

Chinese government owned China Metallurgical Construction (MCC) corporation's efforts to establish the massively destructive Ramu Nickel mine in Madang Province, Papua New Guinea -- the largest investment in metal exploration and mining by the Chinese outside of China -- is in serious jeopardy. Local landowners are successfully initiating court cases and protests to demand mine tailings not be dumped into the sea -- poisoning fish stocks and causing extreme ecological destruction -- or the mine be stopped.

Article originally published as "Resistance Growing to Ecologically Devastating Chinese Mining Invasion of Madang, Papua New Guinea" on rainforestportal.org o 1 Apr 10. What you can do: e-mail China Metallurgical Construction Corporation to let them know of your objection to their invasion of Madang.

Australia's voters turn against population growth

Posted April 2nd, 2010 by marco

The mainstream press is full of growth lobbyists trying to hose down arguments against population growth, but they don't really have any arguments - except narrow self-interest, which is costly for the rest of us, which they can't really afford to admit. Meanwhile ordinary Australians are reporting their many soundly based objections to population growth on the internet, since the mainstream press would rather not print or report these in depth or much at all.

Bernard Salt, Murdoch media insult the memory of Second World War Australians

Posted April 1st, 2010 by admin

In 1946, US President Truman said, of Australia's contribution to the Allied war effort, "On balance, the contribution made by Australia, a country having 7 millions, approximately equalled that of United States." Yet, in 2010, Bernard Salt, a supporter of the record high immigration rate being imposed undemocratically by the Rudd Government has, in an article written for Rupert Murdoch's "Australian" newspaper, misrepresented history in an apparent attempt to belittle and diminish this country's proud achievements. Why?

Queensland Population Growth Management Summit - Australia tied up in plastic and turning out all wrong

Posted April 1st, 2010 by admin

A world propped up on plastic, delivered in a rigid and untenable manner, devoid of joy and equity. Welcome to Australia, folks; this is the world we appear to be striving for.
