HULLS INTRODUCES PROTECTION FOR MORNINGTON CENTRE
Mornington will retain its unique character after the Minister for Planning, Rob Hulls, today announced interim mandatory height limits for its main centre.
"Mornington is the major activity centre on the Peninsula, and given its relative regional location, one that is very different from other major centres in Melbourne," said Mr. Hulls.
"It's proximity to the coast, village feel and open and low scale character has seen it grow not only into a major tourist destination, but a place that people increasingly want to call home.
"Therefore it is important that any provisions for growth recognise and protect the very attributes that have made Mornington popular to begin with."
The interim mandatory height limits for 4 -5 storeys - among the first to be introduced in Victoria - were recommended by the Priority Development Panel.
"Council has worked hard to involve the community in its planning for Mornington, said the Member for Western Port Province, Geoff Hilton.
"I congratulate Council for its hard work. These controls will protect Mornington from inappropriate development."
The interim measures expire on 30 June, 2008.
Mr. Hulls said the interim measures would ensure the Council had an adequate opportunity to complete the activity centre's structure planning process in consultation with residents and stakeholders.
"The character of Mornington is one of the many reasons for its popularity, and as its population grows, so too will pressures for development," Mr. Hulls said.
"These interim measures will help promote suitable and sustainable development while allowing the Council to complete its structure plan work."
